The move sets the stage for a simplified two-slab structure: 5% and 18%, along with a 40% demerit rate reserved for super luxury, sin, and demerit goods.

— Benchmark indices closed with strong gains on Wednesday, led by metals and pharma stocks. The BSE Sensex rose 409.83 points, or 0.51%, to 80,567.71, while the NSE Nifty50 increased by 134.45 points, or 0.55%, to 24,715.05.

— The GST Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and including ministers from all states, likely approved measures to reduce the registration time for non-risky MSMEs and start-ups from the current 30 days to just three.
