Sarvodaya Vidyalayas in Uttar Pradesh are making headlines after 12 out of 25 girls from one of these schools passed the NEET UG 2025 examination, one of the toughest competitive exams in the country. Most of these girls come from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Class (OBC) communities.

Despite facing limited resources and social challenges, they have achieved this milestone through sheer determination and hard work.

Sarvodaya Schools in Uttar Pradesh are run by the Department of Social Welfare and the Tribal Development Department. These institutions are modelled after the Navodaya Vidyalayas and are affiliated with the CBSE board. They aim to provide quality education to talented students from marginalised communities—mainly SC, ST, and OBC groups. Students are offered not just education but also free hostel accommodation, meals, books, and other basic facilities.

Admission Process

Admissions to UP Sarvodaya Schools are conducted through an entrance exam for Classes 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11, depending on the availability of seats. For Classes 6 and 7, there are 70 seats in total, divided into two sections of 35 students each. A key feature of the admission policy is that 85% of seats are reserved for students from rural areas, while 15% are allotted to urban students.

To ensure social equity, 60% of seats are reserved for SC/ST students, 25% for OBCs, and the remaining 15% for the General category.

94 Schools Across the State

Currently, there are 94 Sarvodaya Schools operating across Uttar Pradesh. Since last year, the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) has been responsible for preparing and evaluating the entrance examination papers. The process has been standardised across all schools to maintain transparency and quality.
