Stellantis recalls 1.16M Jeep, Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler cars

  • More than 1.16 million newer vehicles from Dodge, Ram, Jeep, and Chrysler have been recalled in North America
  • An issue with the rearview camera projection has plagued millions of cars since the tech was mandated in 2018
  • A software update remedies the issue, but it must be completed at the dealer

Stellantis has recalled 1,033,433 Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler vehicles in the U.S. for a software issue that can prevent the rearview camera projection from displaying, the NHTSA disclosed last week. Another 126,000 vehicles in Canada face the same recall.

The parent company says its American brands might have been built with radio software that can block the mandated rearview camera projection. The NHTSA says this warrants a safety recall.

The NHTSA has found many automakers to be out of compliance with the technology that was made mandatory for all new cars built since 2018. Recalls have been made for intermittent or flickering images, temporarily blacked-out projections, and sundry issues. Because every new car has one, the rearview camera recalls can be sweeping.

Ford has recalled more than 1 million Mustangs and other cars for a blank or distorted image. Mercedes-Benz recalled most of its sedans and crossover SUVs from the 2019-2021 model years for a rearview camera that can project a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. Honda, BMW, Toyota, Kia, Nissan, and other automakers have recalled millions of vehicles total for rearview camera issues.

Stellantis has backed down this road before. In 2020, Stellantis recalled 318,000 Ram, Jeep, Dodge, and Chrysler vehicles for a blank screen issue.

While the current recall can be remedied by a software update, owners have to take their cars into a dealer service center for it to be updated.

The recall encompasses the following vehicles:

  • 2021-2022 Dodge Durango
  • 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica
  • 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
  • 2022 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500
  • 2022-2023 Jeep Compass
  • 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • 2022-2023 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer

Owners can expect notification by mail as early as Aug. 2 to bring in their cars for service at no cost. For more info, contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or visit the brands’ recall site
